For years, the biggest barrier to GLP-1 weight loss medications wasn't whether they worked — it was the needle. Millions of people who could benefit from semaglutide avoided it because they didn't want weekly injections.
That barrier is gone. Oral Wegovy received FDA approval on December 22, 2025, and became broadly available across the U.S. in January 2026. It's the first oral GLP-1 medication ever approved for weight management.
The FDA Approval
The Wegovy pill (oral semaglutide 25 mg, once daily) is approved for adults with obesity (BMI ≥30) or overweight (BMI ≥27) with at least one weight-related condition, plus cardiovascular risk reduction in adults with established heart disease and overweight or obesity.

How the Pill Works
Getting a peptide drug to survive stomach acid was a major challenge. Novo Nordisk solved it with an absorption enhancer called SNAC that protects the semaglutide and helps it cross the stomach lining. Once absorbed, it works identically to injectable Wegovy.
Clinical Trial Results
OASIS 4 trial: Adherent participants lost an average of 16.6% of their body weight over 64 weeks (vs 2.7% for placebo). One in three lost 20% or more. Results are comparable to injectable Wegovy 2.4 mg.

How to Take the Wegovy Pill
Take it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach with no more than 4 oz of plain water. Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking, or taking other medications. Swallow whole.
Dose titration: 1.5 mg → 4 mg → 9 mg → 25 mg (target dose), with increases roughly monthly.

What's Coming Next
Eli Lilly's orforglipron — a non-peptide oral GLP-1 that can be taken with food — has positive Phase 3 results and is heading toward FDA approval. Novo Nordisk is also developing a higher-dose 50 mg oral semaglutide.
