Hair Loss Telehealth Is a Mess: Finasteride Prices Range from $8 to $95/Month

A 20-year-old generic drug with a 10x price spread. Compounded topicals, 'proprietary' formulas, and subscription traps. Here's what's actually worth paying for.

A generic drug with a 10x price spread

Finasteride 1mg — the FDA-approved treatment for male pattern hair loss — has been generic since 2006. The active pharmaceutical ingredient costs manufacturers virtually nothing. Yet telehealth platforms charge anywhere from $8/month to $95/month for the exact same molecule.

Minoxidil (generic Rogaine) is available over-the-counter for under $10/month. Telehealth platforms that sell "proprietary" minoxidil formulations charge $40–$80. The product inside is the same.

Where the money goes

Compounded topical finasteride is a legitimate product with a clinical rationale — potentially fewer systemic side effects than oral. But it's also not FDA-approved for hair loss, and the evidence base is less robust than telehealth marketing implies. The premium over generic oral finasteride is typically 3–5x.

"Proprietary" multi-ingredient formulations — combinations of finasteride, minoxidil, ketoconazole, biotin, and other ingredients — are the highest-margin products in the hair loss telehealth space. Some work. Most are paying for marketing, not pharmacology.

Subscription lock-in is common. Some platforms require 3–6 month commitments for hair loss treatment, citing the "it takes time to work" rationale. That's clinically accurate — finasteride takes 3–6 months to show results — but it doesn't justify preventing you from canceling.

The smart play

For most men, generic oral finasteride 1mg/day + OTC minoxidil 5% is the evidence-based starting point. If you want the convenience of telehealth prescribing and home delivery, Maximus offers hair growth treatment through a multi-vertical men's health platform with transparent pricing.
